Back in Meiji-era ( 1868-1912), Tai (sea bream ) fish was consided a very expensive fish and only eaten for special day. Though unclear which sweet shops actully started the trend. They decided to change the snack from its circular shape mould to the tai shape mould, The tai shape cake was born and becoame a huge hit.
